Customers expect new cars to have flawless surfaces. Even minimal scratches or paint defects on add-on parts such as bumpers or B-pillars lead to expensive complaints, and faulty curved displays or mirrors can impair driving safety. Yet painted, reflective, and, even more so, curved surfaces are often extremely sensitive and, therefore, difficult to inspect. Nevertheless, precise quality control inspections are essential for manufacturers. Manual visual inspection processes are subject to deviations in terms of reproducibility and defect classification – even for trained employees.
